Create an emergency preparedness plan.

I live near the Gulf of Mexico. I’ve lived here almost 20 years. I’ve been through several hurricanes and tropical storms during this time. The worst one was hurricane Katrina. We had to evacuate.

We went shopping way before it was headed this way. We bought canned food, batteries, ect. We made sure we had our medicines, toiletries, and extra clothes.

We went north toward Mississippi and stayed in a motel that was handicapped accessible because my daughter is in a wheelchair.

We stayed in Mississippi about three days after the storm ended. On the way back home, traffic was terrible, electricity was out everywhere, even some gas stations were still down. We finally made it home. Our house was still standing. We were missing a couple of shutters.

We always prepare for a storm. We stay tuned to local news channels and the weather channel for updates if a storm is headed this way.
